At one point or another, most guys of a certain age and disposition have wondered what it might be like to live as the only guy in an all-girls dormitory. Those who might ask themselves such questions at length are almost certainly the same sort that would buy hentai, and so it is that Heart de Roommate exists to provide scintillating illumination. It’s an idea with the opportunity for weirdness, comedy, heartbreak and sex. The developers knew that well, and the result is a game that actually lives up to the promise of its premise.
Yusuke Sawada is a young man with a string of bad luck. As the game opens, he has just been forced by his parents to attend a special school in which he has no interest. To make matters worse, his wonderful guardians didn’t think to secure him a room at the available dormitory, which is now full up. Relief appears briefly in the form of a nearby apartment complex, only that shelter literally goes up in flames. As he stands watching the blaze, Yusuke is attacked by an energetic young girl who thinks he is a panty thief. He’s not, and as he explains it to her he soon realizes that she’s a former classmate of his, a girl named Asumi Hirota who moved away when both of them were young.
The realization gives him the in he needs, and soon he’s living with three girls in a dormitory with a strict rule against such inhabitants. His place of residence is a closet and his reluctant roommates are the self-assured Asumi, the mysterious Marumu and a girl with large breasts named Tomoe. As the game progresses, he’ll meet plenty of other colorful characters, including a cat named Toshibo that spends much time under the same roof and a group of girls across the hall known as the “Trio de Bitches.”
Before I go any further, it seems important to note that this is not your typical hentai title. While it’s true that there is nudity, that’s not so much the focus as you might anticipate. You probably expect Yusuke to sneak around peeking in bathrooms when girls are bathing, spying on shower stalls at school, and maybe raping a few females for good measure. That’s just not the focus, though, and Heart de Roommate is better for it. Instead of the norm, what you get is an interesting and even heart-warming glimpse of life at a fictional Japanese dormitory.
Each of the girls has her own issues to sort through, and it will fall to Yusuke to help them do so. Everyone pitches in, so the feeling as you read through hours of text is that you’re slowly going from the role of unwelcome outsider to treasured friend. The progression is pleasant and you’ll get to enjoy genre staples as you go. For example, Yusuke will be called upon to squash cockroaches and you’ll hear lots of heart-rending music during scenes of emotional turmoil. There are also the usual backdrops, drawn with excellent detail that really gives each location the personality it needs. Cutscenes, while not animated in the strictest sense of the word, utilize their artwork in a free-flowing form that feels extremely polished.
Heart de Roommate goes beyond solid presentation, though, because its story is one that’s worth telling. There were times when I played that the game felt like it’s more squarely aimed at anyone who doesn’t mind the notion of nudity--boy or girl--since there’s so much depth to each of the characters. Yusuke is likeable but not perfect, while his need to dress up as a girl provides numerous moments of uncomfortable interaction with the game’s supporting cast. Asumi is so determined to be the group’s leader that she overreacts to anyone who questions her authority. Then there’s Tomoe, with more to her story than just a pair of amazing breasts--though the other girls aren’t afraid to point out her assets at opportune moments. Finally, the irrepressible Marumu is easily enough dismissed as comic relief, until you get glimpses of her that reveal so much more.
If it sounds like I’ve fallen in love with the plot and its cast, then perhaps it’s because in a way I have. Hentai developers have tried to create an enjoyable, sexual environment in their games before and since, but you almost always have to wade through content that will make you squirm. Here, that’s kept to a minimum without dropping altogether the idea of girls showing off their carefully-drawn bodies.
Because of that, Heart de Roommate makes an excellent introduction to the genre. You’ll have to wade through a lot of text before you see so much as a nipple, but the substitution--a plot you can really sink your teeth into, one that works to relax you while entertaining you--is more than worth it. I don’t want to say anything more for fear of ruining plot twists and taking away some of the pleasant surprises, but I will say this: Heart de Roommate should be considered a must-have for anyone interested in seeing the genre’s best without feeling like a complete pervert.

I love Heart de Roommate but my favorite novel/bishoujo games still lays with the Kango Shicyauzo series by Trabulance. Don't ask me why, I just do. So far my favorite bishoujo games are Kango Shicyauzo 1 & 2, Heart de Roommate, Do You Like Horny Bunnies 1 & 2, Tsuki-Hime, Fate/Stay Night, & Pia Carrot 1, 2, & 3.

Gameplay[edit]
The gameplay in Heart de Roommate is standard for a visual novel. The player spends most of the time reading text onscreen which indicates the narration, inner thoughts, or dialogue of the characters. At different points in the game, the player will be faced with a decision between two or more choices, which may progress the player in a specific path in the game and have a positive or negative effect on the plot.
Heart de Roommate is divided into twenty-six different 'episodes' to resemble an anime series, even having an episode preview for each upcoming episode.[1] It also has a special episode in which the characters announce which character will be the main heroine for the next half of the game, depending on the choices made by the player, this episode may or may not appear.
Story[edit]
Yusuke Sawada had just been transferred by his parents into a new school, Aiho Academy. But, unfortunately, his parents forgot to enroll him in the dorm, and the apartment he was planning on staying in burnt down as he arrived. While complaining about his current situation, he is mistaken for a panty thief and attacked by a girl, Asumi Hirota, who happens to be his former childhood acquaintance. After realizing who he is, Asumi assumes that he is there to threaten her, and becomes uneasy. Asumi, believing Yusuke has something on her, decides to do something for him under one condition: he must not tell anyone her secret. However, Yusuke does not know what the secret is, but decides to pretend he does. After Asumi explains her condition, Yusuke asks if Asumi can give him a place to stay, Asumi agrees and takes him to the girl's dorm, but, because the dorm doesn't let males in the dorm, she must sneak him in. After meeting the roommates, he is accepted (with some debates) into their room.

The self-appointed leader of the roommates. She is very energetic and is constantly picking on Yusuke, she can become angry very quickly but, despite her outward appearance, is very kind and sweet. Later on the extra ending, she is known to have a dangerous disease.

She is a shy, sweet girl who cares deeply for her friends. When first meeting Yusuke she is very shy toward him as she isn't good with guys, but as time passes, she grows to like him.
- Marumu Ogamayama (小熊山 まるむOgumayama Marumu) (Voiced by: Michiru Yuimoto)
A very strange and quiet girl who shows very little emotion. She doesn't say much but when she does talk, it is usually in a joking manner. Her lack of emotion is due to an accident which damaged her brain causing her to lose all of her emotions.
- Namiki Honjo (本庄 なみきHonjō Namiki)
Yusuke's cousin who makes him call her sister. She is just as energetic as Asumi and even has a similar hair style and color to her. She is a little older than the roommates but is in the same grade as them.
- Yoshiko Yagami (八神 良子Yagami Yoshiko)
She is the homeroom teacher of the four roommates and is very kind to her students, even will to bend rules as to get them out of trouble and putting her own self on the line to help them.
